Disclaimer: this post could be seen as a bit controversial. I just want to begin by saying that I’m not blaming anyone, I’m simply sharing my experiences and opinions and, as always, feel totally free to comment below if you disagree. I would love to hear your thoughts.
In our society so many positive things are labeled as negatives. Putting effort into something or taking it seriously is seen as ‘lame’ and having a dream and putting all your heart into following it is seen as ‘sad’.
I have had many experiences of people telling me that something I’ve done or made or that something I strongly believe in is ‘cringy’. Who are they to tell me that?
They don’t understand the motivation and dedication it takes to get up and go to work every day of your summer holidays to fund for something you love to do. They don’t understand the reason that you take your education seriously and the mindset of doing something to the best of your ability because you learn from it and you can be proud of what you’ve achieved. To do something to help someone else because we need more kindness in this world. To put your soul into making our society a better place to live in when you could just care about yourself. To them that’s uncool. It’s lame. It’s sad.
They don’t understand what it’s like to love something so much that it hurts. To think of it during every moment, to dream of it day and night. To want to dedicate your life to it. To be willing to work hard and sacrifice to get where it is that you want to go.
I look at those people who call me sad or lame and I think about whose future looks brighter. Mine or theirs? I feel sad for people who don’t take anything seriously, who believe that life is a joke because that is what their life will be. One big joke. We will be following our dreams, making a difference and living our lives the way we have created them and they will have missed out on that because of their ignorant perceptions.
I feel sad and angry. People’s lives could be so much more. They could be so much better.
So be a little ‘sadder’, don’t be afraid of being called ‘lame’. All I’m asking is that we change the way we think a little bit, rewind and ask ourselves ‘Why are we calling that lame? Why is that sad?’ Often the things we dismiss or label are priceless, beautiful things that we can learn a lot from if we really take the time.
Please comment and share! I believe that this is a really important issue for our society to become aware of and I would love to hear what you think?
Hi Gracie. Yes! This is so true! And so encouraging. Thank you. I am just setting up a little project where I live called Grace Trust; with the strap line ‘Together we’ll help our neighbourhood thrive.’ The idea is to celebrate the great things about where we live and do our best to listen to people about what they find hard about life too – and then try and respond to those needs. I am so excited about this project but have already been discouraged by people’s opinions of it too.
I think that whenever we want to do something good or helpful, there will always be people who are negative. I still don’t know why, but have definitely experienced it lots over the years.
Keep on going!!

I’m sorry you’ve had to hear those things – that’s not very helpful. I’m glad that you’re still continuing on strongly despite it. ❤ Best of luck to you!

This is so true!! I often am the one to fall into a pit of calling stuff I enjoy doing “lame” or “sad” when I receive a judgemental reaction from someone else and it’s so annoying that my emotions are controlled so easily in that way. I really need to stop caring what they do or don’t think and just keep on doing what I love! ❤️

I was nodding the entire time I read this because honestly, I feel the same way sometimes. I’m not into a lot of things most people my age are into, they go to parties, I write and I’ve always taken my education so seriously. And there are times when I’m so proud of myself for pursuing the things im passionate about even if people find that type of thing lame, but they’re also times when I contemplate whether it would be easier to just be like everybody else. And every time my answer is the same: no. I think it’s great that you’re willing to put the effort into the things that help you fund your dreams, and just knowing that makes me so happy for you❤❤

Thank you so so much, my friend! This is a very relatable comment, I must say 😄 and a very encouraging one too. I definitely go through times where I doubt what I’m doing, but like you, I always come to the same conclusion. Keep up the good work lol ❤️ love to you xx

This is amazing, Gracie! I totally agree with you. I’ve experienced this on not so a serious level but it still doesn’t make sense. Why call something lame when it isn’t? And why downgrade someone’s opinion? Kudos to you for mustering up the bravery to write this!! 😀

Thank you SO much, Starling. On any level, this attitude is wrong and you’re right, it doesn’t make sense?! I agree with you 100%. Thanks again! Xx

I completely agree! We each lead different lives and it is unfair to judge someone else’s perception of something as ‘lame’ or ‘sad’, especially since we can never understand it in the same way that they do

i totally understand this. i recently figured out that i’d like to be a paramedic in the future, so i started preparing for that by taking advanced science classes in school, and i’m planning on taking a class next year that get me certified as an EMT when i graduate. and the people i’ve talked to it about think it’s sad, because they don’t understand why i would want a technical career instead of one that challenges my intelligence. it’s discouraging to hear that, but this post is so very inspiring, so thank you. ❤

Awesome post Gracie! I definitely know what you mean. I really hate it when people waste time – video games, pranks, or only worrying about their own fun – it’s so sad to see people who don’t have dreams or worse yet, have them and do nothing with them. This was inspiring to see another like-minded person. ❤

YES GRACIE ❣️❣️❣️ I’ve met way too many of those people in the last months and anything I do comes off as “try-hard” or “nerdy”. Well I’m sorry that I actually take my education seriously and plan to go somewhere with my life instead of worrying about my snapchat streaks. Actually I’m not sorry. I 100% agree with you💗💗

Well said Gracie. It’s those others that are sad not you. It’s great you have such a good vision of where you want to go in life and that you’re preparing for that. Ignore the naysayers, they’re just jealous of your drive and passion, and head for the destiny you want. I’m going to share your blog xxx

Only just read the first three lines and I agree with you too much. That was amazing – beautiful and relateable. It’s put to me by my school friends that being a Christian is lame and cringey. But God bless you xx I am beginning to ignore society ♥️♥️

Thank you so much! Challenge others, yes, if you have the intentions of helping them make their lives better, but don’t judge them for who they are and who they want to be. I think you’re right, but we should only ignore what we cannot change, or at least try to change. Again, thank you for sharing your thoughts ❤

Hi Gracie! Autumn was right, this post is soo true, and somebody needed to say it because I’m sick of people telling me that when I dream about what I want to work, study and where I want to visit it’s lame and cringey and will never happen, I mean who are they to tell me what I can and can’t believe?! And like you said, at least I have dreams. They will just go through life looking upon other people’s passions and reams as ‘lame’ and cringey. I’m one of those people with dreams, and I know what I want to do in life, and they don’t. I can really agree with this post 💛

Gracie!!!! i’m Speechless!!! So many people have told me my passions are dismissive or unobtainable. Or I shouldn’t try hard. Cause you know disabled people don’t get anywhere. But I’m going everywhere nad i won’t be silenced. I won’t sit around and let them tell me what I can’t do. Just remember your dreams are reachable and so are mine.
